Wrexham’s talisman and goal ace Paul Mullin has reiterated his hope of playing for Wales.
Although from Merseyside, his Newport ancestry qualifies the front man for an international call-up from Rob Page and Mullin could be picked for an autumn friendly against Gibraltar, which might be staged at the Racecourse.
Mullin's impressive 46-goal tally this season undoubtedly, deserves huge plaudits and the Hollywood backing from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney is boosting the Wrexham frontman's cause.
However, there are several other Welsh players, performing at a higher level to the National League, who have also been in sparkling form this season.
They perhaps don't always get the attention they deserve, but they too might be hopeful of a Wales call.
Aaron Collins (midfielder, 25, Bristol Rovers)
Aaron Collins’ outstanding season for Bristol Rovers has most certainly caught the eye of the Red Wall. The man from Newport has racked up 16 goals and 12 assists in 43 appearances; the only player to achieve double figures in League One.
His fantastic season for The Pirates has not gone unnoticed. Collins was honoured as League One Player of the Season at this year’s EFL awards in London, beating off competition from Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan and Peterborough United’s Jonson Clarke-Harris.
These achievements are made all the more impressive considering this is Collins’ first season in the third tier; having previously spent the majority of his career in the National League and League Two.
The Welshman has begun to attract the attention of Championship clubs such as Sunderland, meaning the sky’s the limit for him.
Could we see him in a Cymru shirt soon?
Liam Cullen (forward, 24, Swansea City)
Swansea City’s Liam Cullen has netted several goals from various positions this season. His versatility to start on either flank, as well as a central striker, could offer Page’s squad versatility. So far, Cullen has eight goals and a single assist in 27 appearances for the Swans.
His effort to fight for a place in Russell Martin’s side hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Swans look a better outfit when he’s on the pitch. Subsequently, Cullen’s good form has attracted the likes of Sunderland and Middlesbrough for his signature.
He already has 12 caps and a goal for Wales’ under-21 team. He joins a growing list of home-grown talents who are beckoning for a call-up to the senior level.
Regan Poole (full-back, 24, Lincoln City)
The full-back has proved to be a vital piece in Lincoln City’s armoury making 47 appearances this season. He has also scored two goals and made two assists from the backline.
At only 24, Poole has a vast amount of experience that could prove helpful to Page’s young squad. He has played for Manchester Utd at senior and youth levels and has collected FA Cup and Premier League 2 medals during his time at Old Trafford.
Currently, the Cardiff-born player has 23 caps for Wales’s under-21s side. With concerns over Wales’s defensive capabilities, is it time for Page to give him his first senior cap?
Christian Doidge (centre-forward, 30, Hibernian)
Another centre-forward who might be able to fix Wales’ problems in front of goal is Hibernian’s Christian Doidge, on loan from Kilmarnock. The Newport-born striker offers an alternative to Kieffer Moore who has struggled for playing time at Bournemouth this season. Doidge has contributed three goals and two assists in 17 starts for Hibs.
At 30, he isn’t a long-term solution; however, Page is likely to be considering him. Wales’s squad depth has been a problem and Doidge’s presence from the bench could prove a positive one.
Morgan Fox (left-back, 29, Stoke City)
On loan at Stoke City, Morgan Fox, 29, is another option for Page. The left-back is one of the first names on Alex Neil’s team sheet racking up 38 appearances and three assists this season.
Ben Davies’ injury has raised concerns for Tottenham Hotspur and Wales. As a result, Fox received an emergency international call-up for Wales’ first European qualifier against Latvia.
Davies’ return date is unknown; therefore, the Welsh manager may look to Fox for another call. His impressive season for Stoke may be awarded a Wales spot in the next Euro qualifier against Armenia in June.
