But more on that later.
However, before you spend your cash on a movie ticket, you may be wondering if this is really the film for you. FNaF fans will no doubt be chomping at the bit to see the new instalment, but if you are a new viewer wanting to know more about the sequel, or have just got back from the cinema and want to know more about what you've just seen, then look no further.
In our guide below, we unpack everything you need to know, from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 reviews, release date information, the official cast list, and spoiler-free plot details. After, keep up with other upcoming horror movies still to come.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 release date

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was released in theatres on December 5, 2025. That's just over two years after the first movie hit screens, in October 2023.
After the movie was confirmed in January 2024, filming on the sequel started around Halloween 2024 and wrapped in February 2025. The December release schedule meant fans missed out on seeing the sequel during spooky season. But Five Nights at Freddy's 2 isn't the only horror film Blumhouse has released out of season this year, as the studio sent M3GAN 2.0 to the big screen in summer 2025.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 reviews

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 debuted to pretty negative reviews from critics, calling the sequel "overstuffed," "lousy," and "worse than the first film." The movie stands at a 12% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is 21% lower than the first movie. However, fans seem to feel differently as the movie has a way higher audience score of 89%.
Our Five Nights at Freddy's 2 review reads, "Despite Five Nights at Freddy's 2 slightly bettering its predecessor in terms of scares and impressive animatronics, the sequel fails to understand that less is more. By stuffing as many storylines and characters as possible into its relatively brief runtime, the sequel feels messy and inconclusive, leaving FNaF fans shortchanged."
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 trailer
The official Five Nights at Freddy's 2 trailer, which you can watch above, was released back in July 2025. The clip gave us glimpses at Springtrap, Balloon Boy, Foxy, and the film's new antagonist, the Marionette. Then, some months later, Universal released another trailer focused more on Elizabeth Lail's character, Vanessa, who was left comatose at the end of the first movie and has been suffering from nightmares of her murderous father, William Afton (Matthew Lillard), ever since. The clip also gave us our first look at Afton's former business partner, Henry Emily, played by Skeet Ulrich.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 cast

Five Nights at Freddy’s fans will be happy to know that the bulk of the cast from the first movie returned for the sequel. Despite Vanessa being in a coma at the end of the film, she is alive and well in the sequel, and is trying to get back to normality alongside Mike (Josh Hitcherson) and Abby (Piper Rubio). As for Matthew Lillard, we saw his character, William Afton, die inside his Springtrap suit at the end of the first film, but he is also back on the scene. Well, kind of.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Lillard explained how excited he is to return to the franchise. “I'm thrilled to be a part of it. I'm thrilled to give them the next iteration of the story. I think they're gonna love it," said the star. “The reality is that I've been so lovingly embraced by the FNAF community that it's really humbling.”
As for the newcomers, the sequel adds Scream star Skeet Ulrich as Henry Emily, Afton's fellow animatronic creator. Wayne Knight joins the franchise as Abby's science teacher, Mr. Berg, and McKenna Grace plays a paranormal investigator called Lisa. The animatronics can talk now, too, with Megan Fox voicing Toy Chica, MatPat as Toy Bonnie, and Kellen Goff as Toy Freddy. There are a few more surprises, but we won't spoil that for you here.
The cast list for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is as follows:
- Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt
- Piper Rubio as Abby Schmidt
- Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa
- Matthew Lillard as William Afton
- Skeet Ulrich as Henry Emily
- Wayne Knight as Mr. Berg
- Mckenna Grace as Lisa

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 plot

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 picks up one year after the first movie. The sequel sees ex-Freddy Fazbear security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson), his little sister Abby (Piper Rubio), and his supposed love interest Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), all attempt to live an ordinary life after the horrific events of the first movie.
However, Vanessa, who seems to have recovered from the coma she was put in at the end of the first film, is still plagued by her visions of her murderous father, William Afton. Even though the animatronics managed to murder Afton whilst he was still inside the Springtrap suit, Vanessa cannot escape the dark memories from her childhood. As for Abby, Mike and Vanessa have failed to tell her what really happened at Freddy's, so she is still obsessed with the anintonics, and sees them as heros.
Not even Mike can escape thoughts of Freddy's, as since the first film, Freddy's has become a kitschy local legend in the town, and the first annual FazFest is ready to take place in just a matter of days. However, just as Hutcherson told GamesRadar, Freddy's always has a way of reeling you back in, so the trio ends up back at the restaurant in no time, face to face with newer, shinier versions of the killer machines.
After a series of twists and turns, the trio is forced to fight for survival once again, resulting in one final showdown. For more on that, check out our Five Nights at Freddy's 2 ending explained, and make sure to stick around for the Five Nights at Freddy's 2 post-credits scene.
