Five men linked to Sydney postcode gangs jailed for fatal bashing of Alex Ioane

Five men have been jailed for the fatal bashing of a teenager who was punched and stomped to death outside a house party in Sydney's south-west.

Alex Ioane, 18, had attended the party with his girlfriend before being attacked by a group who were members or associates of local post code gangs.

The young man had no gang affiliations, but was targeted following a minor incident at the party on May 24, 2019.

On Wednesday, in the NSW Supreme Court, five men, Mateaki Taumalolo, Suliasi Taumalolo, Sione Fielio Mayol, and two others known as ST and ET, were sentenced for their roles.

Four of them pleaded guilty to affray, while ST pleaded guilty to manslaughter, having all previously been charged with murder.

"ST joined in what his counsel described as a cowardly and violent attack on Alex as he lay dying and motionless," Justice David Davies said during sentencing.

They joined ringleader, Tafuna Taumalolo, in being convicted for the assault, which unfolded in front of dozens of partygoers.

Tafuna, a member of the Claymore Boys gang, was last month sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder.

The court heard Tafuna, who was 18, punched Mr Ioane to the ground and proceeded to kick and stomp on his head as he lay unconscious on the road.

Others including his cousins Suliasi and Mateaki, and the underage ST also continued the assault on their prone victim.

ET arrived at the party armed with a baseball bat after being summoned to the scene, but did not land any blows.

"Come ASAP because Funa's gonna have a go with some guys from Cabra[matta]," he was told in a text.

The court heard he swung the bat in the direction of Mr Ioane on the ground and yelled to the crowd: "Who wants it next? I'm from Claymore c***".

Some members of the group were affiliated with either the Claymore Boys or the South West gangs, the court heard.

Mayol did not take part in the assault but stood close to his friends as they beat Mr Ioane.

It came after a series of assaults including the group took place at the party, with Mr Ioane's girfriend being "jostled" during one incident.

Mr Ioane yelled out "Oi" before moving away from the earlier fighting.

Outside he was confronted by Taumalolo and became the victim of "gratuitous violence", the court heard.

"His family remain devastated by his death and the circumstances of it," Justice Davies said.

"It is apparent that he was a greatly loved son, brother and uncle to his family."

Mayol was sentenced to a non-parole period of just under one year and two months, time he's already served on remand.

Mateaki was jailed for at least two years and four months and will be eligible for parole in January.

The court heard he deleted his Facebook account and changed his appearance after NSW Police released his picture as they tried to track him down in November 2019.

Suliasi was sentenced to three years and nine months' in prison but is eligible for parole having been in custody since April 2020.

ET is also now eligible for parole after his minimum two-year term expired in March.

The fifth man, ST, was jailed for six years and nine months and will be eligible for parole in September 2023.
