Chinese police reported on Monday that five individuals, including three children, were injured in a stabbing incident in Beijing. The attack took place at approximately 3:20 p.m. local time in the upscale Haidian district of the capital city.
The suspect, a 50-year-old male identified by the last name Tang, was apprehended at the scene by authorities. According to a statement released by local police, the injured victims have been transported to a hospital and are currently in stable condition, with no life-threatening injuries reported.
Video footage circulating on social media depicted a distressing scene, showing two children lying injured and bleeding on the ground. One child was being attended to by an adult, while the other child still had a backpack on. Additionally, a third individual was seen receiving assistance from bystanders, who were providing aid with bloodstained tissues.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Wanquanzhuang Road and Wanliu Middle Road, near Zhongguancun No.3 Elementary School. While the authenticity of the video footage has not been verified, the location of the attack has raised concerns due to its proximity to the school.
China, with a population of 1.4 billion, generally maintains low rates of violent crime. However, the country has experienced several notable stabbing incidents in recent years, some of which have targeted educational institutions. These include a knife attack at an elementary school in 2020, as well as assaults at or near kindergartens in 2022 and 2023.
