Five Edinburgh coffee shops you need to visit this year according to TripAdvisor

If you're looking to de-stress and venture out into the Capital, there are a lot of things that you can do.

As well as sight-seeing and taking pictures - because let's be honest our city is pretty photogenic - you won't fall short of anything to do.

The city has some pretty decent food whether you're a veggie, a vegan or a meat-eater - and there's a lot of restaurants to choose from.

But sometimes it's just nice to sit and relax with a coffee and cake - or a pastry - in hand a watch the world go by.

So where should you visit for a coffee and a fine piece this weekend?

1. Fortuna Coffee Bar

This cafe is one of the most Instagramable places we've seen.

It is ranked as the second coffee place to visit and it's not hard to see why,

Their menu features items such as Hummus Avocado and Veg Toast, bagels as well as a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches and baked goods.

If you want to venture out with your four-legged friend, you'll be even happier to know that they are dog friendly.

One review reads: "My boyfriend and I are travelling and it's so nice to find a little wholesome cafe to settle into right next to our hotel! We had the scrambled egg and toast/the toasty with bacon and they were divine. We also had the chai latte and an iced latte with caramel and they were also delicious.

"Such a lovely atmosphere with lovely waitresses and sweet music, totally recommend to any one wanting a nice little cafe date."

2. Bon Tea Room

We have to mention this place. Why? Because right now it's rated as the number one place to visit on TripAdvisor when it comes to coffee shops.

The cafe has a full five star rating out of almost 300 reviews which tells you everything,

They cater to vegans and vegetarians with coeliacs also eating there too.

One review reads: "Can’t recommend Bon enough. The afternoon tea was amazing and superb value for money. You pick and choose the fillings for the sandwiches so you know they are made fresh to order. In addition to scones and sweet treats on the stand, we were also offered a slice of cake to finish up! We will definitely be going back soon."

If you're in the mood for some French food - and how can we blame you? - then you're in luck.

Reviewers on TripAdvisor's rave about this place and their pastries as well as their coffee so much so it's said to be the place to visit if you want "the proper French patisserie experience."

One review read: "Beautiful little French family-run cafe in Brusntsfield. The cakes and bread are all made on the premises by the patissier and boulanger - and they are truly outstanding. The coffee is wonderful, and if you go first thing in the morning the freshly-baked croissants with jam are mouthwateringly good.

"We recently ordered a sweet petite fours platter to take to a birthday party. It contained mini versions of all of our favourite treats including tiny chocolate eclairs, brownies, meringue, and Paris Brest among others. It was unbelievably delicious and the other guests kept asking where it was from. It was freshly made for collection that day and was excellent value for the cost. Thank you La Barantine for outstandingly good food!"

4. Cuckoo's Bakery

Ranked as number five on the must-visit coffee shops, this place is sure to satisfy your appetite and sweet tooth.

Not only is it ranked within the top five, it has also been awarded TripAdvisor's 'Travellers Choice 2021'.

They thankfully also cater to everyone no matter your dietary restrictions, with the menu featuring items like Mac and Cheese, Roasted Red Pepper Doorstop Sandwich, French Toast and Scottish Pancakes with Berry Compote.

And it's safe to say you are not short of a cupcake selection.

One review reads: "Have Loved this bakery since they first opened. You know as soon as you cross the doorway that you’ve entered somewhere special. "Last week I placed a small order and delivery for my parents. The staff were so helpful and accommodating, they always are regardless if you’re purchasing for a party or a solo cupcake. Thank you."

5. Lowdown Coffee

This is one spot you don't want to miss and others seem to agree with it gaining a full five star rating out of almost 300 reviews.

The self-labelled "modern coffee basement" in Edinburgh is very clean looking and is one for the coffee lovers without a shadow of a doubt.

And great news if you also like carrot cake as people say they make "the best carrot cake".

One review reads: "Delicious cakes and tea in a modern setting with friendly service. Can't ask for much more! "I had a slice of the carrot cake loaf (vegan) which was delicious, and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his salted caramel brownie. Other baked items were sold out - a sure sign that these were equally as great. I had the tricolore tea which was a slightly citrus-y black tea and went with my choice of cake perfectly. I bet the coffee is just as delicious - I'd like to go back and try that and another baked treat next!"
