The weather outside is definitely frightful in the past few weeks which has made leaving the comfort of our homes a bit harder. Not to mention summing the willpower to get changed out of warm Pjs and hoodies into something more social gathering friendly.
However, it's not all bad as a cold night can give you the perfect excuse for a hot whiskey, or two, in some of the city's best pubs. If you plan a visit just right then you might be able to sit by a roaring fire and defrost yourself for a few hours.
But how to know where to go with so many pubs on offer? We've made a list of a few of the best to get you started.
1 - John Borlase Warren
Canning Circus
The John Borlaise is a bit outside of the city centre but it's worth a trek up Derby Road to get to the top. The pub has a real fire where you can keep warm and plenty of cosy spots to curl up in to enjoy a good pint.
It's worth noting that it offers a great pub quiz on a Tuesday night too which is even more of an excuse to get out and about. Although it gets busy so the pub does suggest booking in advance.
2 - Old Trip to Jerusalem
Brewhouse Yard
What could be better than a proper fire in a traditional pub that has a great selection of real ales? The Old Trip to Jerusalem is the oldest pub in Nottingham and boasts a great open fire with plenty of seating.
The venue also has a full menu of classic pub dishes such as burgers, fish and chips but they have recently launched a new festive menu. You can expect pulled turkey with ham hock pie, beetroot tarte tartin or pigs in blankets and rarebit burger all followed by a spot of Christmas pudding.
3 - The Punchbowl
Mapperley
The Punchbowl has a wonderful selection of food and drinks but it's a great location if you just want to unwind in front of the fire. The cosy pub is just outside of the city centre but has plenty of car parking on site.
There is also plenty to do at the pub between sports on big screens, quiz nights and the occasional Abba theme night. Although, if you just want to have a quiet drink, then it's a good shout for that too.
4 - The Gooseberry
Peel Street
The Gooseberry is a bit of a hidden gem outside of the city centre so it can be a bit quieter than its Market Square and Hockley counterparts. It is part of the Wetherspoon's chain so you know what to expect before you go in that there will be cheap pints, food and oddly patterned carpets.
It's not the only Wetherspoons with a fire as the Samuel Hall in Sherwood also has a fire going most days.
5 - The Railway
Lowdham
The Railway is a great place to head to in the summer months thanks to its huge outdoor area which also has a playground for children. But it's actually one to note during the winter months too as it has a fire inside which makes it a nice cosy spot for a post-work wine.
The log burner isn't always on but when it is, it heats the pub and creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. If that doesn't do the trick then stay for the menu which is one of the best pub lunches in Nottingham.
