Five clubs Thomas Tuchel could join after former Chelsea manager rejects Bayer Leverkusen

Thomas Tuchel's next club remains a mystery, as it is approaching a month since Todd Boehly made the decision to sack him at Chelsea.

The Champions League-winning manager was dismissed as the LA Dodgers part-owner wanted to opt for something new that matched his long-term ambitions for this new project and that person was Graham Potter.

Despite the ruthless nature of the decision which has been heavily scrutinised already, Tuchel and his assistants said their farewells to the Blues fanbase on social media in an amicable fashion.

The German's message on his Twitter read: "This is one of the most difficult statements I have ever had to write - and it is one which I hoped I would not need to do for many years.

"I am devastated that my time at Chelsea has come to an end. This is a club where I felt at home, both professionally and personally. Thank you so much to all the staff, the players and the supporters for making me feel very welcome from the start.

"The pride and joy I felt at helping the team to win the Champions League and the Club World Cup will stay with me forever. I am honoured to have been a part of this club’s history and the memories of the last 19 months will always have a special place in my heart."

Since he released this statement, it had been revealed by various outlets that Tuchel didn't want to spend too long out of the game, so it's somewhat of a surprise that as per The Mirror, the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss has rejected an approach from Bundesliga strugglers Bayer Leverkusen, who currently sit in the relegation zone early on after a disastrous start to 2022/23.

With this in mind, football.london previews the five clubs that could appeal in the now and potentially near future.

Juventus

The Old Lady have started the 2022/23 Serie A campaign in underwhelming form, as they currently sit in seventh place after eight games played on a mere 13 points.

A loss away to minnows Monza and a draw at home to Salertnitana coupled with two losses in the Champions League at the hands of Benfica and PSG has put Max Allegri's future in major doubt.

It is widely known that Juventus want to see out this bad patch and keep Allegri until the end of the season, whereby they then try to convince current Tottenham manager Antonio Conte to come back but whether that will be viable remains to be seen.

A loss at home to Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League Group H could be terminal for their qualification hopes and an early UCL exit could cause Juve's board to react accordingly with a change in manager.

Liverpool

The Reds have fallen off from the high standards demonstrated in 2021/22, when they defeated Chelsea in the final of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Their latest slip at home to Brighton has the 2020/21 Premier League champions 11 points off the pace ahead of fixtures domestically against Arsenal and Manchester City. It's unlikely that Fenway Sports Group would contemplate sacking Jurgen Klopp, considering what he has done for the club since his arrival back in 2015.

For Tuchel to join the Anfield-based club, Klopp himself would likely have to call time on his own career on Merseyside.

Wolves

The West Midlands outfit, like Liverpool, have not lived up to expectations at all in the early parts of 2022/23.

After the most recent 2-0 West Ham defeat, the hierarchy made a difficult decision to part ways with Bruno Lage ahead of their return trip to the capital next weekend to take on Potter's side.

Initially, it looked as though they wouldn't make an appointment ahead of this game week 9 fixture but reports in Spain have indicated that former Sevilla and Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui has a 'verbal agreement' to become Lage's successor.

Whether Wolves U-turn and try and convince Tuchel to take on this project remains a long shot at this point.

Inter Milan

Just like their Italian counterparts Juventus, Internazionale and manager Simone Inzaghi have endured a rough start to 2022/23.

Sitting one point and two places behind Juve, whose manager as already mentioned is under severe pressure, the 2020/21 Serie A Champions have a big task on their hands to recover not only domestically but also in the Champions League too.

Whether or not owner Steven Zhang reacts if a few more results go against them remains to be seen but appointing Tuchel could have a downside, especially considering Romelu Lukaku, a player who fell out with Potter's predecessor, is on loan there for this season and maybe beyond too.

Lyon

Ligue 1 is usually dominated by the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille, Lyon, Lille and a few others who make up the top four spaces.

However, Peter Bosz's side have fallen off the pace having lost four in a row domestically. It's a run of form that has led to some fans questioning his future but owner Jean-Michel Aulas is set to stick with the Dutchman for a little longer, referencing Boehly's Tuchel decision as a bad example.

He told GFFN (Get French Football News): “I’m not here to start a revolution. I am not a billionaire (Boehly) who sacks someone who won the Champions League (Tuchel) as Chelsea did. I make decisions primarily in the interest of the club, and he (Bosz) will stay."

Whether or not this stance continues remains to be seen but also, whether or not Tuchel sees this opportunity in a similar mind to the Leverkusen role could make this a no-go right from the off.
