Fitness instructor only found out she had stage four cancer after getting out of breath walking to her own class

A fitness instructor from Swansea only found out she had stage four cancer when she started getting out of breath as she walked up the stairs at her gym. Gaynor Hulland, 66, started to notice something was wrong as she was running nine cardio and weights based classes a week at the city’s LC leisure centre.

As well as breathlessness, she also felt tired but simply put that down to be being a woman in her mid 60s who was still extremely fit and active. Deciding that something wasn’t right, she went for tests at her local GP practice. “My symptoms first started in February (2022) where I was getting breathless on my way up the stairs,” said Gaynor.

“I was also feeling tired but as I was doing so many classes in a week, I was naturally tired anyway so thought it was down to that. I have been a fitness instructor for 13 years and before that I was a marathon runner. I have completed five London Marathons and some triathlons too. When I started feeling breathless I thought ‘this isn’t right’ so went to my GP and was referred for a bronchoscopy and a lung biopsy. I also had to go for several CT scans.” You can keep up to date with the latest Swansea news by signing up to the local newsletter here.
