Fishing boat missing, speedboat sinks, in Trat

The fishing boat Choke Kanya.

TRAT - The Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre said on Tuesday a search had begun for a fishing boat with a crew of five reported missing off the Trat coast in the Gulf of Thailand.

The Choke Kanya had departed Mae Kim Huay pier in Trat on June 28. It had not been heard from since the captain reported taking shelter in Ao Yai bay to avoid strong winds on Monday.

The search for the 17-gross-tonne trawler began on Tuesday morning. It has a crew of five, a Thai captain and four Cambodians.

Separately, the centre said it was informed that a Koh Mak-registered diving speedboat had sunk at Laem Ngop pier in Laem Ngop district about 4.30pm on Monday.

The boat normally carried cargo and three people. It had left Laem Ngop pier and headed for Koh Mak. Around Koh Salak, water began leaking in through the stern. The crew found and plugged a hole, pumped the water out and turned back to Laem Ngop.

The leak grew in size, and the boat sank at Laem Ngop pier. No injuries were reported.
