Fisherman 'dragged to his death by crocodile' as horrified friends hear his screams

A fisherman is feared dead after he was reportedly dragged away by a crocodile.

Rescue teams have been frantically searching for the man along the Kennedy river in Queensland, Australia, this weekend after he vanished on Friday evening.

Nearby campers described hearing loud screams coming from the water as he was reportedly taken by the animal.

It is thought he was at the bank of the river when the crocodile attacked.

Initial search efforts by police and other emergency services proved unsuccessful, with a rescue helicopter dispatched from the city of Cairns as others looked along the river on the ground.

Efforts are expected to continue on Sunday as members of the Australia State Emergency Service arrive to assist the search.

It comes after a man was given a rude awakening while sleeping on a beach in the same state earlier this month when he was suddenly attacked by a crocodile.

The man was sleeping on the sand when he was bitten on the foot, and then travelled in the night to the Mossman hospital for treatment where he has since been discharged.

A Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service spokesperson said the incident occurred at Newell Beach in Far North Queensland.

A Department of Environment and Science (DES) spokesperson said it would investigate the incident, adding: "Wildlife officers [will be][ attending the Newell Beach region to confirm if a crocodile is in the area. The man has not notified DES about the possible incident,"

An official website run by the Queensland Government warns that "crocodiles are a common occurrence in northern Queensland" and that "no waterway in northern Queensland can ever be considered crocodile-free".
