A local angler fishing at a shoreline in South Africa saved a woman who was drowning when his fishing line hooked onto her.
The man was fishing along the shoreline at Dias Beach, Mossel Bay, when fishermen noticed the woman in the ocean. The woman had gone out for a midnight swim and got pulled into the ocean by a riptide.
The fisherman quickly began to cast his fishing line in the direction of the woman, attempting to grab her with it. The Kabeljou fishhook attached to the end of his line hooked onto the woman's jeans, allowing the fisherman to reel her safely to shore, reported the National Sea Rescue Institute.
"Fishermen, angling from the shoreline, witnessed the lady in the water and a local fisherman cast his fishing rod in her direction, with the fishing line attached to a Kabeljou fishhook," said National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman Craig Lambinon.
"The fisherman was able to reel her in towards the beach where once she reached waist-deep water, a local fisherman waded into the water and helped her out the water onto the beach as NSRI and emergency services were arriving on the scene," he continued. "The local fisherman is commended for his effort that contributed to saving the lady's life."
The 31-year-old woman was located safely on the beach by the time authorities arrived. She was provided with medical assistance.
"At 00:57 on Wednesday, December 18, NSRI Mossel Bay duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of a drowning in progress at Tri Towers, Dias Beach, Mossel Bay. NSRI Mossel Bay rescue swimmers, the South African Police Services, Frontier Medix ambulance services, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services, and Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services responded," Lambinon said.
The woman was treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms.
