A restaurant which was completely destroyed in a massive fire on Mumbles Pier will reopen this year. The huge fire in September 2022 completely ruined the popular Copperfish restaurant at the end of the pier. A nearby community room which was formerly Cinderella's nightclub was also decimated in the blaze.
After work was finally able to start on the fish and chip restaurant, bar and takeaway last month, staff at Mumbles Pier have officially announced its re-opening. A post on the Mumbles Pier website states:
"After the devastating fire in 2022 we have all missed the popular Fish and Chip restaurant that called Mumbles Pier its home. The popular restaurant and Old Nightclub were completely destroyed in the fire but through grit and determination April 2023 saw work begin to rebuild the restaurant in the surviving adjacent building. The owners of Mumbles Pier; Fred and Bert Bollom hope to have the takeaway aspect of Copperfish up and running by July 2023 ready for the summer season – with the restaurant opening by Winter 2023." The good news comes after a difficult period following the fire which reduced the restaurant that had stood on the pier for five years down to rubble back in August 31. The fire saw thick black smoke billowing over Mumbles' skyline and a day later burnt tables and chairs could be seen on the floor of the site of the restaurant. As well as a broken roof which had fallen in, there were rows of glasses and alcohol which could still be seen on shelves behind the bar.
No-one was injured in the fire and the amusement arcade, Beach Hut cafe, RNLI base and pier were not hit by the blaze. Although staff at Copperfish said they were "totally devestated" by the fire in a social media post at the time, they promised it would "not be the end" for the business.
The recent post on the Mumbles Pier website continued to detail other updates including that contractors have started work on the old rowing club which will be part of a new development with a bar and restaurant by the sea.. A full renovation will transform the previously derelict building and will include a new build with outdoor seating which will boast panoramic sea views across Swansea, read the post.
Despite exciting new developments taking place, the Pier itself remains shut after funding was withdrawn for its renovation after the fire last year. But owners remain hopeful that upcoming projects will help attract investment into the historical landmark, the post on Mumbles Pier website read.
"Mumbles Pier would like to thank all our loyal patrons for continuing to support us through these times and are looking forward to the summer season ahead," the post continued.
"Fred and Bert Bollom would like to express their sincerest thanks to many supporting partners, organisations and suppliers who have offered their continued support of Mumbles Pier through these turbulent times including Mumbles Community Council, RNLI, Castell Howell, Snowdons, Axl XL and the community and employees at Mumbles Pier without whom the work would not have been able to start," stated the post.
