Monday marks the start of Winter Weather Awareness Week across the Commonwealth.
Keeping safe and warm during winter emergencies includes preparing your home by insulating pipes, testing carbon monoxide detectors and keeping home supplies stocked. It also includes creating an emergency supply kit for your car and keeping your phone charged with emergency contacts available.
Governor Andy Beshear proclaimed the week as such during his regular media briefing Thursday. Last winter saw a cold front sink temperatures below zero degrees across Kentucky.
“If anyone needs any more reason to be weather-aware after the last several years, just remember on Christmas Eve last year, how incredibly cold it was,” Beshear said. “And a few days before, how it was dangerous to travel.”
He said the proclamation was necessary after many disastrous weather events across Kentucky.
“We have overcome unimaginable weather events in the Commonwealth and we've lost far too many people through them,” Beshear said. “But my hope and what I've seen is people becoming more and more and more weather aware.”
