First tsunami waves hit Japan’s coast as earthquake damage is reported

  • A tsunami measuring 80 centimetres was detected at Kuji port and 40 centimetres at Miyako port, both located in Japan's Iwate prefecture.
  • Authorities had issued warnings for tsunamis up to 3 metres in height for parts of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures.
  • Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed initial reports of 'human and material damage' resulting from the major earthquake.
  • An emergency task force has been established by Prime Minister Takaichi to manage the disaster response.
  • The earthquake's magnitude was upgraded to 7.4, registering an 'upper 5' on Japan's seismic intensity scale, indicating strong ground movement.
