No one wants a stay in Hawaii cut short, but Friday brought an end for a number of golfers at the Sony Open. This doesn’t mean some won’t hang around the island of Oahu for a couple more days, but their work week is done after 36 holes.
The first full-field event – and therefore first cut – of 2023 featured 19 of the 39 players who competed in the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua last week.
A number of notable names failed to advance to the weekend at the Sony, including one of the first-round co-leaders.
Check out the full list below.
Cut line: 2 under
Jordan Spieth (1 under)
Jordan Spieth is the first player to lead or co-lead after the first round and miss the cut since Matt Every at the 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational. Overall, he’s just the seventh player to do so in the last 10 years.
He had an 11-foot birdie putt at the last but couldn’t get it to go.
Tom Kim (1 over)
Tom Kim felt like America’s pick to win this week, coming off a T-5 at the Sentry TOC and heading to a golf course that perfectly fits his game.
Didn’t play out like the script.
Kim couldn’t get anything going on the greens, firing rounds of 72-69 to head back to the mainland a few days early. The 20-year-old is in the field for next week’s American Express in California.
Billy Horschel (3 over)
Billy Horschel has a T-7, a T-56 and a T-30 (out of 39) so far this season. He also had a short work week in Honolulu after shooting 72-71 over 36 holes to miss the cut.
Keegan Bradley (3 over)
Bradley lost nearly two strokes with the flat stick over the first two days at Waialae and in turn, is headed home early. Rounds of 71-72 weren’t nearly enough to get it done.
Harry Higgs (3 over)
The struggles for the big man continue as Harry Higgs is headed home after rounds of 72-71.
In six starts this season, Higgs has now missed four cuts.
Sungjae Im (2 over)
Im only hit 50 percent of his fairways through two rounds and that proved to be fatal. Rounds of 71-71 have Im trunk-slamming in paradise.
Gary Woodland (1 over)
Woodland finished 1 over through two rounds, although Friday was much better than Thursday. A bogey-free five-under 65 wasn’t quite enough to get the job done.
Webb Simpson (1 over)
Webb Simpson has now played in three events this season that had a 36-hole cut. He’s missed them all. Not a great start to his 2022-23 campaign.
