The first reactions are in for Lee Cronin's The Mummy – and they're very positive. Described as "terrifying", "squirm-inducing" and "unrelenting", the new horror movie from the Evil Dead Rise director is winning over early viewers.
The monster movie reimagines the classic horror franchise in a more domestic setting as it follows the young daughter of a journalist who goes missing, only to reappear eight years later. However, the joyful reunion soon turns into a nightmare as their daughter is not as they remember her.
Newcomer Natalie Grace is getting plenty of praise as the young girl Katie Cannon, already being compared to horror icons like Linda Blair. She stars alongside Midsommer star Jack Reynor, Moon Knight's May Calamawy, and Laia Costa. Check out some of the first reactions below.
Film critic Courtney Howard writes: "#LeeCroninsTheMummy goes hard. It does not hold back. A freaky-as-fuck creepshow. Scary, scream-worthy & squirm-inducing. Natalie Grace is the MVP in a Linda Blair-inspired performance."
"#LeeCroninsTheMummy is, without question, the most terrifying and disgusting Mummy movie you’ll ever see," adds Comic Book's Chris Killian. "Unrelenting in some ways that I can’t go into because spoilers, and it’s definitely not for everyone, but if you enjoyed Evil Dead Rise, chances are you’ll love this."
Slash Film writer Bill Bria posted on X: "#LeeCroninsTheMummy is a nasty, gruesome, mean-spirited & disgusting little shit of a movie. In other words, it’s a ripper. Plays like if Cronin saw BRING HER BACK after binging THE OMEN, THE VANISHING, & BRAINDEAD and then said 'bet.' Bit long in the tooth, but she bites. Hard."
Interestingly, it seems the horror isn't pure scares either, with photographer Tyler Disney praising how it is able to "blend horror and comedy in the perfect way". Meanwhile, film critic Aaron Neuwirth admits there are some "bizarre" choices, but "the spirit of a gross monster movie involving a little girl mummy pays off well."
