Life in plastic really does seem fantastic judging by the first look at Margot Robbie in upcoming film Barbie.
Yes, you heard that right. Fashion’s favourite doll is getting her own live-action film, and Robbie is playing the lead role.
In the first look photo released by Warner Bros, she is seen behind the wheel of Barbie’s famous pink Corvette car.
In addition to Robbie, the film’s all-star cast includes names like Will Ferrell and Simu Liu – as well as Ghostbusters’ Kate McKinnon and America Ferrera.
Ryan Gosling will also be making an appearance as Barbie’s longtime boyfriend Ken.
If that wasn’t enough, it’s also being directed by Hollywood darling Greta Gerwig (who co-wrote the script alongside Noah Baumbach), who has helmed hits like Little Women and Lady Bird.
Warner Bros announced at CinemaCon on Tuesday evening that the film is set to be released on July 21, 2023, with production already underway.
Though the cast and crew have been coy about the plot, the official synopsis reads: “A doll living in ‘Barbieland’ is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world. A Live-action feature film based on the popular line of Barbie toys.”

Given that Ferrell is said to be playing the CEO of a toy company that might be Mattel, the film certainly seems like new territory for Barbie.
Indeed, when Robbie was announced as the lead role in December 2020 after months of speculation, she promised to give audiences “something totally different”.
Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, she added: “Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, "Oh Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is."
“But our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted.’”
It’s been a busy year for Robbie, who is also set to produce the project via her production studios LuckyChap, alongside husband Tom Ackerley.
Though she will be joined by Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner and David Heyman, the producer of Paddington, this project will have her stamp on it and marks Robbie’s growing influence in the film industry.
One thing’s for sure: this will be Barbie as you’ve not seen her before.
