First picture of 'wonderful and kind' woman killed in Glasgow city centre crash

A woman who died after being hit by a vehicle in Glasgow city centre has been described as a "wonderful, kind, intelligent young woman".

Chinenye Vera Okonkwo, from Nigeria, was struck on St Vincent Street on Thursday, February 2. The 33-year-old was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Her heartbroken family released a touching tribute to their "passionate" loved one and said their lives will "never be the same" without her.

In a statement released via Police Scotland, her family said: “Chinenye was a wonderful, kind, intelligent young woman with a strong faith in God. She had a passion to succeed and whatever obstacles she faced were overcome.

“She was very family-orientated and always had time for everyone. Our lives will never be the same without her.”

Chinenye died in a crash involving two vehicles at around 7.40pm last Thursday. A woman, 28, was arrested in connection with the incident but was later released following enquiries.

Police locked down the area around the horror smash on February 2, with St Vincent Street, Pitt Street, Elmbank Street and Elderslie Street all closed. Pictures from the scene showed a huge emergency service response, with a number of police units in attendance.

Colleagues of Chinenye also paid tribute the young woman. Eidoj Noseimaj said: "This is so sad still. You just don't know what's round the corner. Had the pleasure of working alongside you for a few months. May you rest in peace heart goes out to your family at this horrific time!"

Donna Colquhoun added: "RIP Vera had the pleasure of working with this beautiful lady…thoughts are with your family."

A Police Scotland spokesperson previously said: “Around 7.40pm on Thursday, February 2, officers received a report of a crash involving two vehicles and a pedestrian on St Vincent Street, Glasgow. Emergency services attended but the female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The driver of one of the vehicles, a 28-year-old woman, was arrested in connection with the incident and released pending further enquiries. The road was closed while crash investigations were carried out and reopened around 3.15am.”
