An Edinburgh teen who collapsed and died as he played football with pals at school has been named as Andrew MacKinnon.
The 15-year-old took ill suddenly as he had a kickabout at Forrester High School in the Broomhouse area of Edinburgh on Tuesday afternoon. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
The young Hearts fan, who played for Salvesen blues 07s, leaves sister Aimee, 20, younger sister Rachel, 18, mum, 48, Janine Dow, dad also Andrew MacKinnon, 40, and stepdad Gary Weir, 55.
His devastated family said are heartbroken by his passing. His dad Andrew told Edinburgh Live: "He was a really popular wee boy and a massive Hearts fan. He had so many friends and just loved his friends, family and football.
"He really was such a lovely wee boy and really loved his football. He died doing the thing he loved most and we are all heartbroken.
"We will be at Forrester at 4pm to put his strip up behind the goals and remember Andrew. Anybody is welcome to come."
Big sister Aimee said: "Andrew was a very beloved son, brother, nephew and grandson. He was such a little warrior who never gave up and will be missed forever.
"His memory will forever march on with us. We love you millions little man shine bright angel, sleep tight beautiful boy, you are so loved."
Stephen Rafferty, Head Teacher at Forrester High School, said: "Our school and local community have been shocked and saddened by Andrew’s passing. He was such a likeable character, loved by everyone who knew him.
"He was a great sportsman, an outstanding team player and a loyal friend. Our deepest sympathies are with Andrew’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
Friends of the youngster and fellow fans of his beloved team Hearts paid tribute online as a fundraiser was launched for his family. A GoFundMe has raised £2,700 in just two hours.
Several shared the message: "There's only one Andrew MacKinnon."
One pal said: "Rest in piece Andrew – so heartbreaking. We all love you...only one Andrew MacKinnon."
Another friend said: "Rest easy Andrew MacKinnon gbnf [gone but not forgotten]. Will miss u my wee pal xx."
Family friend Megan Malone, who created the fundraiser, wrote: "On Tuesday 14th March they sadly lost their son Andrew. He was doing what he loved, playing football and suddenly passed away.
"He was a lovely, caring boy and adored his family. A few years ago Andrew went through massive surgery - he was the strongest lad and powered through life with the biggest smile on his face.
"On behalf of the family we have set this GoFundMe up to take as much pressure off the family as we can at this hard time. We pass our love onto you all and Andrew will forever be the brightest star in the sky."
Local team Kirkliston and South Queensferry FC said: "KSQ are saddened to hear of the sudden passing of young Andrew MacKinnon who lost his life playing football with his friends yesterday in Edinburgh. The thoughts of the entire club are with his family and friends at this sad time."
Local barbershop So Barbers shared a picture of a sharp haircut it had given Andrew in the past. The shop said: "Thoughts go out to Andrews family and friends at this sad time. Rest easy my wee pal, was a pleasure being your barber, the shop won’t be the same without the silly comments and the random football visits to tell me what’s happened."
Local parish St David's Broomhouse Parish Church opened its doors late last night to allow residents to grieve. It said on social media: “Following the difficult circumstances earlier today, the church will be open tonight, 8pm-9pm for quiet reflection and the opportunity to light a candle. All are welcome.”
A police spokesperson said: "On Tuesday, 14 March, 2023, police were made aware a 15-year-old boy had died after collapsing in Broomhouse Road, Edinburgh. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson said that appropriate supports have been put in place for pupils and staff at Forrester High School following the tragedy.
