First picture of man who died after being hit by lorry in Glasgow

Tributes have been paid to a man who died after being struck by a Mercedes lorry in Glasgow on Thursday.

Cameron Eaglesham is understood to have been crossing the city's Duke Street, near the Bellfield Street junction, moments before he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 11am, with ambulances, a special operations response team (SORT) and a trauma team in attendance, as police cordoned off a section of the street.

Cameron was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, but sadly the 44-year-old died. His heartbroken family have left a floral tribute and balloon at the scene of the crash.

A friend of the family spoke to Glasgow Live, where they told of their shock, as well as immense sadness at losing a loved one who was so young. Cameron was described as a "brilliant" uncle and brother.

They said: "We are all upset and it’s a shock, we can’t believe it. I don’t think it has hit us yet. My dad looked after his wee brothers and they always came with us on holiday, we used to go camping in a caravan when we were younger. My dad treated him like a son.

"I met him in the city centre two days ago. I said he looked brilliant and asked how he had been. My dad is in the hospital because he had a stroke and we had to get him out of the hospital to tell him what happened. He was screaming “no, not my baby brother”."

Police Scotland said on Thursday that the 45-year-old female driver of the Mercedes lorry was uninjured, and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Sergeant James Crawford of the Divisional Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died.

“Our enquiries are at an early stage and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the crash take place who has not yet spoken to police to contact us.

“Anyone with information should contact officers through 101 with reference number 1390 of June 1.”
