First look at Sarah Lancashire filming Happy Valley as series returns after six years

Filming for the third and final series of Happy Valley is well underway.

Sarah Lancashire has been snapped on location in Yorkshire today (Tuesday), as she resumes her role of Catherine Cawood in the popular crime drama.

Cast and crew are currently shooting scenes for the BBC series on Bath Place, off Boothtown Road in Boothtown, Halifax.

Onlookers have spotted a police van parked on a side street - with star of the show Sarah parading around in full police uniform.

In the new shots, the actress, 57, looks ready for action - as the show prepares to return to our television screens for the first time since 2016.

The crime drama, written and created by Sally Wainwright, has been a huge hit with fans and critics over the years - winning multiple awards, including a BAFTA, and attracting 9.3 million viewers at one point during the second series.

Happy Valley follows the life of police sergeant Catherine trying to juggle her work duties with raising her young grandson after her mother - her daughter - died by suicide due to an horrific rape ordeal.

After two drama-packed series, fans are eager for the third and final instalment of the crime saga - due to air later this year.

"When Catherine discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir it sparks a chain of events that unwittingly leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce," a synopsis for the upcoming series of the show teases.

"Her grandson Ryan is now sixteen and still living with Catherine, but he has ideas of his own about what kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father.

"Still battling the seemingly never-ending problem of drugs in the valley and those who supply them, Catherine is on the cusp of retirement."

Lead actress Sarah - who won a BAFTA for her role on the show - has spoken of her excitement at seeing her character take on murderer and sex offender Tommy Lee Royce one final time.

"It's time to let the dog see the rabbit," the former Coronation Street actress told the BBC last year, as it was confirmed Happy Valley was coming back for one last six-part series.

James Norton, who plays villain Tommy, also relished resuming his role on the show, adding that taking "Tommy on one final time" is "a wonderful and daunting privilege".

Series creator and writer Sally was also "delighted" to be able to create the final instalment of the Happy Valley trilogy.

"It’s been wonderful to see the lasting impact this series has had on audiences all over the world," she said last year.

"I’m thrilled that Sarah, James and Siobhan are back on board for what I hope will be the best season yet, and thrilled once again to be working with the wonderful team at Lookout Point, the BBC and our new colleagues at AMC."
