First look at Prince Harry's new memoir including title and striking cover photo

Prince Harry's highly anticipated new memoir will be titled Spare and is set to be released in January.

Publishers Penguin Random House confirmed the title of his book, which is a nod to the phrase “the heir and the spare” and Harry's status as the second-born son behind his older brother Prince William.

The book was originally anticipated to be released this autumn, but has likely been delayed in honour of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II's, passing in September. It will be will be launched globally on January 10, 2023.

Proceeds of Harry's book will be split between two charities. The first being Sentebale, to which Harry donated $1.5 million (£1.29m). The royal founded the organisation, which supports vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana affected by HIV/Aids, with Prince Seeiso in their mothers’ legacies.

The second is WellChild, which Harry has been the royal patron of for 15 years and will receive a £300,000 donation. WellChild allows children and young people with complex health needs to be cared for at home instead of hospital, where possible.

The official description of Spare reads: “It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow – and horror.

It adds: "As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on. For Harry, this is his story at last. With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief."

The 416-page book, which has a striking portrait of Harry on the front cover, will cost £28 for a hardback, with the audiobook voiced by Harry himself, priced at £20.

Penguin Random House said the memoir will be available in English in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada, while the book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages, including Spanish, Italian, German and Chinese.

Meanwhile, a description under the heading "about the author" reads: “Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, is a husband, father, humanitarian, military veteran, mental wellness advocate, and environmentalist. He resides in Santa Barbara, California, with his family and three dogs.”
