First Kirkcudbright farmers and producers market of 2022 raises funds for Ukraine relief effort

Kirkcudbright’s first farmers and producers market of the year raised hundreds of pounds
for the Ukraine relief effort.

Organisers Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities have decided to offer one stall to a named fundraising organisation at each event, with Kirkcudbright Rotary Club the first to be invited along.

They gladly accepted the offer with a view to raising money for orphans in Ukraine and their efforts received a further boost with the festivities organising a raffle using prizes generously donated by stallholders.

The raffle and donations collected by Rotarians and three volunteers from Kirkcudbright Academy received a magnificent sum of £700.

This money will now be sent to The Dnipro Kids Appeal which is a charity set up by supporters of Hibernian FC in 2005.

The charity has helped 46 orphans to safety since Russian troops invaded Ukraine last month.

The children, from five orphanages, are now staying in Scotland and will stay as a group together with the orphanage staff in the Edinburgh area.

The markets take place on the fourth Sunday of every month and were the first of the summer festivities’ packed programme for this year.

Lots are lined up over the next few months including the country fair in July with everything from a dog and duck display to the Wheel of Death.

And later in the year there will be the return of the floodlit tattoo which takes on an international flavour this year thanks to the appearance of the Calgary Burns Choir.

But before then there is a spectacular celebration on Sunday, June 5, to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Summer Festivities chairman John Blaikie said: “We are going to have bands playing, storytelling, fair ground rides and lots more.

“Kirkcudbright had one of the biggest street parties in Scotland for the jubilee 10 years ago and we’re hoping to do the same again.”

Seats and tables for the street party can be booked online at www.ksf.scot/tickets

Free, unreserved seating will also be available.
