Bury Market is set to undergo a major overhaul.
The hugely popular shopping destination has looked largely the same for years, but council bosses are hoping a £20m facelift - along with some eye-catching new features - will 'future-proof' the site.
Computer-generated images of how the market could look include the impressive new structures that will surround a new flexi-hall. There will also be a large over-sail canopy built above the stalls.
The multi-million pound development will form a central part of wider plans to regenerate the town centre, including a new Bury Interchange and redeveloped Mill Gate centre.
The flexi-hall will be used for events and other activities and more seating areas, greenery and better signage are also part of the plans.
A number of public consultation meetings will also take place in January when visitors can talk to the project leads and give their views on the proposals. These drop-in sessions are on Wednesday January 18, Saturday, January 21 and Friday, January 27, from 10am to 2pm at the Bury Market Hall entrance foyer.
A consultation page has also been created on the council’s One Community website where people can read about the scheme, view the images and provide feedback. Go to www.onecommunitybury.co.uk/burymarketregeneration– the survey is open until January 29.
Coun Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, said: “The plans for Bury Market are a key part of our unprecedented investment into transforming the town centre. Using council money, plus £20m we won from the government’s Levelling Up Fund, we aim to secure a thriving future for our much-loved market.”
Coun Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture and the economy, said: “Bury Market dates back to the 1440s and is rightly described as the jewel in Bury’s crown. With changing times, and shopping habits, it is essential that we make sure our famous and award-winning market is ready to meet the challenges of the future.
“Please take this opportunity to view the plans and give us your views on how Bury Market can flourish for many more years to come.”
