A fireman suffered "major traumatic injuries" while he was on duty.
The man, who has not been named by Merseyside Fire and Rescue, was "on duty" on January 9 when North West Ambulance Service was called to Thornton Street, Litherland following a 999 call. The fireman in his 50s was taken to hospital.
HSE confirmed that they are "looking into" the incident. Merseyside Fire and Rescue have said they take the health and safety of their employees "very seriously".

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "We can confirm that an incident occurred which is being investigated, but we cannot confirm the identity of anyone involved. Merseyside Fire & Rescue Authority takes the health and safety of all employees very seriously - saving lives and keeping our firefighters safe is of the greatest importance to us.
"If anyone is injured while on duty we ensure their welfare takes priority and an investigation into the incident takes place to establish the facts of the events."
A spokesperson for the NWAS said: "We were called to RTC on Thornton Street, Litherland following a 999 call. A man in his 50s was taken to hospital to be treated for major trauma related injuries."
