Delaware Seashore State Park is home to a rare and endangered species of firefly known as the Bethany Beach firefly. With only an estimated 1,000 left, this particular firefly is at risk of being the first of America's fireflies to be placed on the Endangered Species List due to threats from rising seas caused by climate change and increasing housing developments.
While the common Big Dipper firefly thrives, other species like the Bethany Beach firefly are facing challenges. Fireflies play a crucial role in ecosystems, with their bioluminescent flashes serving as both a warning to predators and a means of communication for mating.
