Firefighters save baby trapped in car as reckless driver slammed for going through flood

Firefighters had to come to the rescue of baby after the tot was left stranded in a car that got stuck in floodwater.

The crew from Red Watch saved the young child in Taunton, Somerset, following a deluge.

They were called Creech St Michael on Saturday after a motorist attempted to drive through the floods.

The reckless driver become stuck as the car was submerged as heavy rain battered the south west again, SomersetLive reports.

After calling the emergency services for help, the firefighters raced to the scene to help them all escape the water.

Posting on its Facebook page, Taunton Fire Station wrote: "Crews used flood suits and wading poles to assist the driver, passenger and six-month-old baby."

The car owner was slammed by locals on the page for trying to drive through the water.

It was the second time in the space of two days that fire crews had to rescue a motorist on the same stretch of road.

That led to the fire station putting out a post on Facebook, urging people to not drive into floodwater.

The post reads: "Even if it looks shallow you can put yourself and your passengers at risk. Please drive carefully and plan ahead for your journey."

Devon has been hit by flooding recently, with roads flooding in Tiverton after the River Exe burst its banks.

It was announced yesterday that more than 100 flood warnings have been issued by The Environment Agency, typically in the west and south-west England.

Terrible weather has damaged hundreds of homes and left several with no power.

Flooding also caused a partial closure on the railway line between Totnes and Plymouth.

Natural Resources Wales has issued dozens of flood alerts around Wales, and seven flood warnings concentrated in the south.

Areas close to rivers like the Wye, Severn and Avon are especially vulnerable to flood warnings, including for groundwater flooding.

The West Midlands has already been hit by floods, with people prepared for high river levels.

Yesterday, some flood alerts - meaning flooding is possible - were also in place further north, including in Keswick in the Lake District, and areas of Yorkshire.

There are also one flood warning in place in Scotland for Callander and Ayr to Troon, and seven flood alerts across the country.

Bus and train services are likely to be affected, according to forecasters, with flooding on roads and spray making journeys longer.
