Firefighters remain at scene of major blaze at Northumberland recycling plant

A major road in Northumberland had to be closed yesterday as nine fire crews battled a major fire at a recycling plant.

Emergency services were called to the plant on Brock Lane in West Sleekburn at 12.30pm on Saturday.

The high winds brought by Storm Malik caused additional problems for firefighters, as burning embers set grass alight next to the nearby Fergusons Yard.

An additional Northumberland Fire and Rescue fire engine was also stationed on the Spine Road putting out flying burning embers on the verges.

The C403 and C415 roads to nearby Cambois were closed due to the fire and diversions put in place, while the A189 Spine Road was also closed due to smoke drifting and poor visibility.

The Spine Road was reopened by 3pm, although motorists were still advised to avoid the area due to smoke. Those that did use the road were asked to reduce speed, close their windows and switch their headlights on.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue have confirmed that one appliance is still at the scene as of 3pm on Sunday in order to monitor the situation, and the fire is being allowed to burn out in a controlled manner.

Fire investigators are now working to find the cause of the blaze.
