Firefighters continue to tackle blaze on Marsden Moor

Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire which broke out yesterday (June 9) on Marsden Moor.

Crews from 13 fire stations were initially called to the blaze on the moor which crosses between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire. Dramatic pictures were released of firefighters tackling heavy smoke to get the blaze under control.

Fires on the moor, just east of Saddleworth, have become a regular site in recent months, especially in times of warm weather. The fire at its peak yesterday measured more than 200 square metres.

Fire crews remain in attendance today after 'containing' the fire overnight. A spokesperson said they will be damping down hot spots and asking the public to stay away from the area.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We are still in attendance at a wildfire on Marsden Moor which was contained overnight and now measures approximately 200m by 150m. Today firefighters will be damping down hot spots.

"Crews currently in attendance are Huddersfield, Shipley, Dewsbury and Huslet with wildfire support from Slaithwaite. We will be at the incident for the rest of the day and are asking members of the public to stay away from the site, which is at Binn Lane, near Butterley Reservoir. Firefighters are using beaters, blowers, hose reels and water relay to extinguish the fire."

Seven previous fires had broken out on Marsden Moor this year. Crews returned to the scene last Tuesday, when it is believed an area of Marsden Moor had reignited. It comes as the National Trust is preparing to host a public meeting with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and West Yorkshire Police about the recent spate of fires next Wednesday (June 14).
