Fire tears through Edinburgh home as hero crews race to the scene

Emergency services have rushed to a busy Edinburgh street after a fire broke out in a property.

Drum Street, Gilmerton, was closed on Tuesday morning as firefighters battled the blaze which is understood to have started within a home. Police and ambulance crews have also been spotted at the scene.

Several Lothian Bus services have been diverted while emergency services ensure the area is safe. The 3, 29 and X29 have all issued a service alert to passengers informing them of the diversion. The street has since reopened.

It reads: "Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Drum Street and are instead diverted via Gilmerton Dykes Street, Lasswade Road and Gilmerton Station Road, southbound only until further notice."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed crews are currently in attendance, but could not give any other detail at this time, however the incident is thought to have taken place shortly after 7am on April 25.

Several users have also taken to social media to warn others in the area of delays. One said: "There’s been a fire in Drum Street. Road closed for a while yet. Police and fire services on site. Buses diverted."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 7.10am on Tuesday, 25 April, to a report of a fire at a flat on Drum Street, Edinburgh.

“Emergency services attended and a 69-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a precaution.

The fire was put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 0704hrs this morning from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to attend a fire at an address on Drum Street, Gilmerton. We dispatched two ambulances and a SORT vehicle to the scene, and one patient was transported to hospital.”
