Fire services and ambulances rush to Cardiff apartment complex after blaze breaks out

Fire crews and ambulances rushed to an apartment complex in the Grangetown area after a fire was reported there. On Wednesday, December 7, at around 3pm a fire was reported at Victoria Wharf.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s firefighters and appliances attended the incident, which was contained to one apartment and found to be caused accidentally by an electrical fault. The fire service confirmed that the fire was extinguished at 3.51pm and crews remained at the scene to support residents and the building management team.

The Welsh Ambulance Service was also called at 3.50pm to the scene, to which it sent its Hazardous Area Response Team, but it was ultimately not needed.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called today (07 December) at 3:50pm to reports of an incident in Victoria Wharf, Cardiff. We sent a Hazardous Area Response Team and a duty operational manager to the scene. No further treatment was required, and we were subsequently stood down.”

A spokesperson from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 15:05hrs on Wednesday 7th December, a fire was reported at an apartment complex in the Grangetown area of Cardiff. Several of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s firefighters and appliances attended the incident, which was contained to one apartment and found to be caused accidentally by an electrical fault.

"The fire was confirmed as being extinguished at 15:51hrs, but our crews remain in attendance, supporting residents and the building management team to return the property to normal status as soon as possible. Firefighters from Cardiff Central Station will return to the complex tomorrow to offer the residents home fire safety advice. The Victoria Wharf building has been embroiled in the cladding safety scandal. Surveyors previously found several fire safety risks at the apartment complex, with flammable polystyrene in the walls and a lack of adequate fire barriers. The development has suffered multiple balcony fires this year.

Commenting on the balcony fires at the time a spokesperson for building managers FirstPort said: “We understand this incident has been really unsettling for residents and we are doing all we can to support them."
