Fire service statement as crews tackle Morley care home blaze

The fire service has warned Morley residents to keep doors and windows shut as it tackles a big care home blaze.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service were called out around 4.35am this morning (Friday, April 21) to the property fire on Britannia Road and Dartmouth Avenue. The road was closed by West Yorkshire Police as firefighters got to work.

Reporter Megan Banner spotted at least six fire engines dealing with the blaze, which engulfed an unoccupied care home. Fire crews were still in attendance as of 7am.

A statement from the fire service read: "Unoccupied care home involved in fire, 5 fire engines and support crews currently in attendance and dealing. Local residents advised to keep doors and windows closed due to low lying smoke in the area."

Pumps attended from Dewsbury, Hunslet and Cleckheaton Fire Stations. Pictures from the scene showed large plumes of smoke rising from the building while police officers guarded the road cordons.
