Fire incidents: Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation inspects midi-buses

BENGALURU: With two Ashok Leyland midi-buses catching fire in the last two weeks, BMTC along with officials from the bus maker on Wednesday inspected them and other vehicles.

BMTC officials said they inducted 186 Ashok Leyland midi-buses in 2014. “These buses have crossed seven years as well as covered 4-5 lakh km. We checked all midi-buses for wiring and other issues to prevent any untoward incidents in future,” said a senior BMTC official.

According to BMTC’s preliminary report, short circuit was the reason for both the accidents.

On Tuesday, 25 passengers had a miraculous escape when the bus they were travelling in caught fire near South End Circle. On January 21, another BMTC bus carrying 25 passengers caught fire near Makkalakuta, Chamarajpet. No passengers were injured. “BMTC’s chief mechanical engineer and team have been told to inquire and submit a report on the cause of the incidents. BMTC is investigating the reason and taking all safety measures to ensure buses operate in good condition,” said a press release. tnn
