Firefighters tackle massive blaze in Dundee as roads in city centre blocked off

Fire crews are currently battling a huge blaze in an abandoned building in Dundee City Centre tonight.

Emergency services raced to Barrack Street, Dundee at around 6pm after reports of a fire in the old building, which is believed to be the former Robertson's furniture shop.

Locals say flames can be seen from all over the city this evening, as firefighters attempt to get the blaze under control.

Some crowds were seen gathering in the street as the fire raged on throughout Saturday evening. Police have closed several surrounding roads as emergency services deal with the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6pm on Saturday police were called to assist the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, at the scene of a fire on Barrack Street.

“Emergency Services remain at the scene and the neighbouring streets are currently closed.”

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment.

A cordon has been put in place following the incident, with police redirecting traffic as neighbouring streets are closed.

Shona Robison, MSP for Dundee East and social justice secretary, said: "Such a shame to see the destruction of the once lovely Art Deco Robertson furniture store building in Dundee. Thoughts are with the emergency services working hard to get the blaze under control."

North East MSP Maurice Golden said he hoped the fire was under control and that "everyone is safe".

A SFRS spokeswoman said: "We are currently attending a large building fire on Barrack Street in Dundee. Operations Control mobilised nine appliances and other specialist resources to the scene.

"No casualties have been reported. Firefighters are working extremely hard to extinguish the fire. Crews will remain on the scene for some time."
