Do you have at least one fire extinguisher in your garage or secured to your UTV? Lots of people do, especially those of us who are very DIY-inclined. If you're like me, and you're the type of person who carries a first aid kit and some basic tools wherever you go, I'm going to guess that you might also have at least one fire extinguisher on hand.
If you do, you may want to check whether you have a Prepared Hero Fire Spray Canister, specifically one that has a Production Date Code of 09/2024 on the bottom of the canister. Check the image up above for a close-up look at what the stamped date codes look like; there will be a Production Date Code up top, and an Expiration Date Code at the bottom. It's the Production Date Code you need to pay attention to in this case.
On September 10, 2026, Prepared Hero and the US Consumer Protection Safety Commision issued a fast track safety recall on this batch of Prepared Hero Fire Spray Canisters, which were sold both via the PreparedHero.com website and via Amazon between October 2024 and January 2026. They retailed for between US $18 and $30 at that time.
Notably, the recalled Fire Spray Canisters came in two different colorways: Red and Blue together, or just Red. Both have the Prepared Hero logo on them, as well as big text on the front that says HERO Fire Spray, and the label will indicate that they contain 20 ounces of spray inside. Each canister is around 2.6 inches in diameter, and is about 11.4 inches tall while weighing just under 2 pounds. Additionally, you'll see a black plastic release tab up on the top.
Stop Using These Recalled Fire Extinguishers, But Don't Throw Them Away
Because these fire extinguisher products are pressurized, Prepared Hero lists an entire disposal procedure that you should follow in order to properly and safely get rid of the recalled fire extinguishers. They cannot and should not simply be thrown away with your regular household trash.
Instead, you should find a municipal Household Hazardous Waste collection point or event in your area and dispose of them there. Check the link in the paragraph above this one for full and detailed instructions on how to prepare your fire extinguisher for dropoff.
Don't worry, Prepared Hero is also prepared to make this recall right with affected customers. In addition to immediately stopping use and disposing of the affected Prepared Hero Fire Spray Canisters, you can register for a free replacement of your canister on their website.
This will require you to fill out some information, and also take a photo of the production date code on the bottom of each of your affected canisters. If you have a purchase receipt available, you can also provide that to Prepared Hero as well to support your claim.
