"Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave" is taking a different approach to saving game progress. Unlike previous games in the series, the new strategy RPG gives players just one save file for the entire game.
That may sound restrictive, especially for a game with multiple storylines. "Fire Emblem: Three Houses," for example, allowed players to use up to 25 save slots.
However, the developers have built other systems around the limitation. These features are designed to make replaying chapters and exploring different stories easier.
One Save File Covers the Entire Game
"Fortune's Weave" follows several heroes through separate storylines. Each campaign can take hours to complete.
Despite the game's branching structure, players cannot create multiple traditional save files. All progress is stored in a single file.
Game director Toshiyuki Kusakihara discussed the decision in Nintendo's Ask The Developer blog. He explained that keeping progress in one save file was considered the better approach for Fortune's Weave.
The developers also wanted players to keep the experience they earned throughout their playthrough.
There were technical reasons behind the decision as well. Associate producer Kenta Nakanishi said that supporting several save slots could cause complications at the system level.
Players Can Replay Earlier Chapters
The single-save system does not mean players are locked into every decision they make.
"Fortune's Weave" allows players to revisit earlier chapters. They can also move between different character storylines as they progress.
The game keeps data for each protagonist at the start of every chapter. This gives players more freedom to return to earlier sections without losing their current progress.
Players can revisit maps and replay battles. They can also watch previous cutscenes and explore different parts of the game's story. For players who want to test the waters with the new exploration, the flexibility will speak for itself compared with traditional multiple-save systems.
Missable Content Is Not a Major Concern
According to GameRant, the developers have also confirmed that "Fortune's Weave" does not contain permanently missable content.
Players who miss an item or fail to recruit a unit can return to an earlier chapter. They do not have to restart the entire game to recover what they missed.
This also reduces the pressure of reaching a point of no return.
Because previous sections remain accessible, the developers did not believe a traditional warning was necessary. Nakanishi instead encouraged players to make use of the game's replay features.
How Much is the 'Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave' Switch 2 Edition?
"Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave" is available worldwide exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. Its digital edition starts at $69.99.
The story centers on the mysterious Eshmel. Players travel five years into the past as the demon god Balor and his forces threaten the land.
Four heroes sit at the center of the story: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. Each character brings a different perspective and storyline to the campaign.
Up to this day, we have no clue what to expect for each house, but it's interesting to see that there will be new rivalries, alliances, and surprises that await "FE" fans globally.
