Fintona: Delivery driver killed in traffic incident named locally

A man killed in a road traffic collision in Co Tyrone on Sunday has been named locally as 31-year-old Gergely Tamcsu.

The Hungarian native is understood to have been living in the Lurgan area and was working as a delivery driver when the incident occurred on Sunday 2 April in Fintona.

Emergency services attended the scene of the collision in the Garvallagh Road area of the village on Sunday, but police later confirmed that a man in his 30s had died.

The deceased had been working as a delivery driver for a contractor which carries out deliveries for Amazon.

In a statement provided to Belfast Live on Monday, a spokesperson for Amazon said it was a "terrible incident".

“This is a terrible incident and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the driver's family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the spokesperson said.

“We will work with police and the delivery service partner as they investigate.”

Local councillor for West Tyrone, Stephen McCann, said his thoughts were with the deceased's family and praised the local response to the incident.

"Having spoken to members of the local community about what happened yesterday they are very shocked about what happened," Cllr McCann said.

"I know that there were some people on the scene quickly trying to help. I'd like to extend my sympathies to this young man's family.

"Here was a young man out working to put bread on the table for his family and to be involved in something like this is just tragic. It's been a traumatic episode for everyone involved but first and foremost the thoughts are with this young man's family."

It was reported by police that a Vauxhall Vivaro was the only vehicle involved in the incident.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing, with police appealing to the driver of a dark coloured Toyota Hilux who may have been in the area at the time to come forward.
