Finks allegedly 'celebrated' rival bikie's shooting

Finks bikies celebrated what they believed was the successful murder of a rival Mongols gang member who was shot four times in the head and chest, jurors have heard.

Sione Hokafonu is standing trial for the attempted murder of Rocco Curra, who miraculously survived the shooting after being lured to a suburban street in Bulleen and shot at a dozen times on August 1, 2019.

It's alleged Hokafonu was one of two gunmen driven to the scene by Poiva Sita, who is also charged with attempted murder.

Sita's brother, Joseph Opapo, is charged with intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence, over an allegation he drove the pair from the scene in a second getaway vehicle after the first was set on fire.

All three have pleaded not guilty and deny any involvement in the shooting.

It's alleged the ambush was a hot topic of conversation among Finks bikies and other associates at their clubhouse in the following days.

When asked why Mr Curra had been shot, Hokafonu allegedly replied "blood for blood or an eye for an eye", the prosecution's key witness told the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday.

The man, who gave evidence from an undisclosed remote location, cannot be identified.

"There was talk amongst everyone that they thought he was dead," he said.

"Hence the celebratory drinks."

The man is expected to face cross-examination next week by the three accuseds' lawyers, who argue his claims should be heavily scrutinised.

Jurors have already seen CCTV footage from nearby homes on the night, showing a stolen silver BMW hatchback stop in front of Mr Curra's car.

Footage shows two men jump from the front and back passenger seats and each fire a series of shots - 11 or 12 in total - into Mr Curra's vehicle.

He was struck four times in the head, neck and chest. Mr Curra attempted to drive away but crashed into a tree, and then stumbled to a nearby home where residents called emergency services.

He spent three weeks in hospital after the shooting, which he was lucky to survive, prosecutor Neill Hutton said.

Mr Curra was targeted only because of his association with the Mongols Motorcycle Club, it's alleged.

There had been a series of incidents between the two clubs in the lead-up, starting with an incident at the Sporting Globe pub at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre where a Mongols associate threw a salt shaker at a television during a State of Origin rugby league match.

Members of the two clubs then scuffled, and it's alleged a Finks bikie took a "Support Your Local Mongols" jumper belonging to a club associate as a "trophy".

Hokafonu was shot in the foot days after that interaction, in an alleged act of retaliation for the jumper incident.

Another man, Tavita Sua, is accused of being the second gunman to fire shots at Mr Curra. His case is being heard separately.
