KOLKATA: Kaushik Gangoapdhyay, professor at the department of archaeology at CU, examined the pieces of pottery and building materials obtained from the site and found resemblance with artefacts excavated from Chandraketugarh, Tamluk and Bahiri.
“The coarse grey ware pottery found from Kochpukur have parallel grooves and paddle marks and the shape that has been documented is a bowl with everted rim and a vase with the preserved rim with roundish cross-section. The fine grey ware pottery indicates an early dating of the site as similar items have been recovered from Chandraketugarh. The common shape of this variety is the dish with convex sides and flat base,” said Gangopadhyay, adding that the building materials recovered from the base of the mound are grooved tiles in red fabric, which were used as part of the roof of early historic structures and do not go beyond 4th century CE.
