Financial sanctions for 600 banned from US over Kinahan links

Gardai have pinpointed criminal targets to hit with financial sanctions after they were placed on a list of over 600 banned from the US over links to the Kinahan cartel.

Investigators tasked with dismantling Daniel Kinahan’s mob are gathering evidence in a bid to extend monetary penalties beyond the initial seven cartel chiefs the US government declared war on last month.

On the list compiled by American authorities, in conjunction with the UK and gardai, there are major Irish and international criminals.

There are also figures from the professional boxing industry who Daniel had worked with as he attempted to improve his reputation through the sport.

As it stands, these people cannot gain entry to the States.

But the criminal figures are not yet affected by financial sanctions imposed by American or UAE authorities which Daniel, 44, his father Christy Snr, 65, and brother Christy Jnr, 41, along with four other associates were hit with last month.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said: “There are serious crime figures who are currently without US sanctions but who are on that list.”

But the Garda chief says not all of the force’s law enforcement partners were in the EU, adding that they are spread out “on a far more international basis”.

Rules in different countries could be applied to stop these individuals from travelling to particular jurisdictions while financial sanctions can also be applied.

The Garda boss said: “For all those individuals we have to assess them, assess what that means for the crime investigation and then follow through with the necessary authorities to either source financial information here, or in some other jurisdiction.”

Commissioner Harris explained that information is continuing to flow to the Garda and US authorities on foot of the $5million reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the top three in the cartel.

He added that the probe into the priority targets on the US travel list is also garnering new information.

The commissioner said: “Behind all of this, there’s a huge amount of information flowing from banking internationally. There’s also a huge amount of information flowing in less salubrious areas of society as well.” Daniel Kinahan’s one-time “best friend” Matthew Macklin has already been refused entry to the States last month when working for Sky TV.

The pro-fighter founded boxing management firm MTK with Kinahan in 2012.

Although heavyweight champ Tyson Fury was previously advised by Kinahan in the sport, his co-promoter Bob Arum told the Irish Mirror this week that the fighter would not be affected by travel sanctions because he had no business relationship with Kinahan.
