Final piece of Kirkcudbright warm space funding package could be slotted into place

The final piece of the funding package for a warm space in Kirkcudbright could be slotted into place next week.

The committee of the town’s community centre wants to hold sessions “so that individuals can come together to sit, chat and socialise for a few hours where they don’t have to heat or use electricity at home”.

The group had originally planned to hold three sessions a week for a year, but scaled those plans down to two sessions a week for 26 weeks due to a delay in a decision from the National Lottery.

A report for next Wednesday’s meeting of Kirkcudbright common good sub committee reveals that the National Lottery has now agreed to award £2,795 – half of the amount they had requested.

The community centre will provide £1,500 from its own funds and has also received £1,000 from Stewartry area committee and £500 from Kirkcudbright Rotary Club.

The total cost of the initial six months of the project is £9,617, which would be for basic materials and ongoing running costs.

All other aspects will be done on a voluntary basis “from refitting the kitchen in the community centre, to buying, preparing and serving the food”.

The group has applied to the common good fund for £7,000, with the town’s community council recommending an award of £5,000.

The committee hopes the project can be extended for another six months if further funding is awarded.
