Final penthouses in controversial development for sale

The final pair of penthouses in a controversial Woden development are now for sale, following years of construction.

Units 2303 and 2301 in the W2 building at 49 Furzer Street each have three bedrooms and a bathroom on the top floor of the development, with sweeping views of Woden and the hills beyond.

Selling agent Wayne Harriden, of Civium Property Group, said the 23-storey views were the selling points for these apartments.

"It is incredibly high up, so it clears absolutely everything - including any future developments," he said.

"You look over the town centre straight across to [the] Brindabellas and houses on top of the trees."

In fact, the units, priced at $1.7 million and $1.45 million respectively, are some of the highest abodes in Phillip, beaten only by the Grand Central Towers on Bowes Street.

Mr Harriden said the four other penthouses in the development sold off plan.

"But some don't want to buy off a plan because they can't visualise it," he said.

"The majority of interest is now coming from downsizers who are looking to sell."

The W2 building, developed by Keggins, took more than a decade to be approved for the historic Borrowdale House site.

The development has sparked outrage with the Woden Valley Community Council who were angered by a lack of consultation in the 10 years from when an initial application was lodged and approval.

Borrowdale House was sold twice between the initial 2010 application and the beginning of construction on the site.

But Mr Harriden said since then, demand for the apartments had been strong.

Five properties are still for sale in the development, according to Allhomes, starting from $650,000 for a two-bedroom unit.

Buyers were not deterred from purchasing a penthouse that shared a floor with others, either, breaking convention from the traditional exclusivity associated with top-floor living.

"These apartments are still much bigger than the ones on the lower floor," Mr Harriden said.

In the main bedroom, a high-end open dressing area and a freestanding bath adds a sense of luxury.

High ceilings also add to the sense of space in the abode.
