Final Fantasy VII Revelation release date, platforms, new characters, and job system

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final game in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, and it now has a release window. The game launches in spring 2027, but Square Enix has not announced an exact release date yet.

It is also launching on more platforms than the first two games did at release. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC at the same time, making it a full multiplatform release from day one.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation release window

Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches in Spring 2027. There is no exact date yet, so anything more specific than that is still guesswork.

Fans were wondering if the game would be out in time for the original Final Fantasy VII’s 30-year anniversary on January 31, but unfortunately, it seems to be missing the exact date by some months. Still, 2027 is the anniversary year, and the game is coming out close enough.

The first game, Final Fantasy VII Remake, launched in 2020 and focused on Midgar. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth followed in 2024 and expanded the story into a large open world. Revelation now has to finish the job, which is easier said than done when it has to implement the entirety of the explorable world.

What platforms is Final Fantasy VII Revelation on?

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is launching on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

The PC version is coming through Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox PC. That makes Revelation the first game in the remake trilogy to launch across all of those platforms at once.

This is a big shift from how the trilogy started, as Remake and Rebirth were closely associated with PlayStation at launch, while the rest of the platforms had to wait.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are now available across modern platforms as well, so PC, Xbox, and Nintendo players will be able to get up to speed and ready with everything that has already transpired.

Where does Final Fantasy VII Revelation’s story pick up?

Final Fantasy VII Revelation picks up after the ending of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. That means the party is moving into the final part of the story after the events around the Forgotten Capital, Aerith, Sephiroth, Zack, and the remake trilogy’s growing timeline mess.

It’s the same endgame players know from the original Final Fantasy VII: Sephiroth is moving toward his final plan, Meteor is a looming threat in the sky, the Weapons are active, and the planet is running out of time.

Rebirth ended with one of the trilogy’s most debated story turns, and Revelation now has to answer what actually happened, what Cloud understands, what Aerith’s role is, how Zack fits into the finale, and whether the trilogy is still moving toward the old ending, the original one, or something completely different.

Are Vincent and Cid playable in Final Fantasy VII Revelation?

Yes, Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind are playable in Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

Both characters appeared in Rebirth, but they were not fully playable party members. Vincent and Cid now join Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith, Red XIII, Yuffie, and Cait Sith as part of the fully assembled party.

Vincent brings gunplay and his old transformation mechanics, while Cid uses his spear and looks much more mobile than his old turn-based version could ever suggest. The trailer also showed synergistic attacks involving the two characters, which makes sense since Rebirth already made party teamwork a thing.

What is the FITS job system in Final Fantasy VII Revelation?

Final Fantasy VII Revelation adds a new system called FITS, short for Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear. It’s essentially the trilogy’s version of a pseudo job system.

Instead of classic jobs like Dragoon, Monk, or Black Mage being separate classes, FITS gives characters special outfits or armor sets with different moves and abilities. Each FIT changes how a character plays with new abilities available to all of them.

During Maximilian Dood’s post-show stream, director Naoki Hamaguchi also revealed that each character has four FITS. That means every playable character should have multiple roles or combat-style options, which could make party building much deeper than in Remake or Rebirth.

Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation open world?

Yes, Final Fantasy VII Revelation keeps the large open-world structure from Rebirth and pushes it further.

Players can fly the airship, Highwind, explore the world, and seamlessly jump from it into open areas. That is a major step up from Rebirth, where the world was vast yet still divided into distinct regions with specific travel rules.

It looks like Square Enix wasn’t able to solve the problem of landing the Highwind in various locations, so they decided that diving from it with parachutes was the next best solution.

Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation the final game?

Yes, Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the final entry in the remake trilogy.

This is the game that ends the modern retelling that started with Remake and continued with Rebirth. It has to resolve the final battle with Sephiroth, the fate of the planet, the Weapons, Meteor, Cloud’s identity crisis, Zack’s role, Aerith’s place in the story, and whatever the trilogy has been doing with fate since the Whispers first appeared in Midgar.
