Square Enix used Gamescom's biggest stage to give fans a fresh look at "Final Fantasy VII Revelation," the closing chapter of its long-running remake trilogy.
Game director Naoki Hamaguchi took to the stage himself to walk through what the newest footage revealed, giving players their clearest picture yet of how the story wraps up.
'Final Fantasy VII Revelation' New Trailer at Gamescom 2026
Square Enix debuted a new trailer titled "The Planet's Crisis" during Gamescom Opening Night Live earlier today, marking the second official trailer released for the game.
The footage centers on the emergence of the Weapons, a group of enormous guardian creatures the planet conjures in response to Sephiroth's growing threat, making no distinction between friend or foe as they unleash destruction across the world.
The trailer showed off large-scale battles taking place across desert sands, in mid-air dogfights, and at the bottom of the sea, all set against the backdrop of Meteor descending toward the planet. Alongside the Weapons themselves, the footage highlighted open-world exploration through the Highwind airship, letting players drop into any location using a parachute for a seamless transition from air to land.
Square Enix reiterated the game's previously confirmed Spring 2027 release window, without revealing a firmer date, and confirmed the title will launch simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
'FFVII Revelation' Shows Off New Submarine Combat
Among the trailer's quicker cuts was a brief but notable shot of the party navigating underwater using a submarine, a mechanic returning directly from the original 1997 "Final Fantasy VII."
That callback ties into the game's broader emphasis on exploration, joining other traversal options shown off in the footage, including Yuffie using a grappling hook while making her way through Wutai, along with chocobo mounts available across the open world.
The submarine sequence stood out specifically as a nod to longtime fans, since the original underwater battle against Emerald Weapon remains one of the most memorable optional encounters from the 1997 release (via IGN).
Its reappearance suggests Square Enix is leaning into recreating some of the original game's most iconic late-game challenges within this reimagined, fully open world structure.
'FFVII Revelation' Trailer: New Weapons and More
The trailer confirmed three Weapons by name: the desert-dwelling Ruby Weapon, the underwater Emerald Weapon, and the extra-powerful Ultima Weapon. That said, Diamond Weapon and Sapphire Weapon are also confirmed to appear in the game even though they were not directly highlighted in this particular trailer.
Combat footage also showed off the game's new FITS system, which gives characters unique outfits tied to classic "Final Fantasy" job roles. These were shown through Cloud and Tifa's Warrior and Black Mage FITS respectively, including Tifa using Black Mage abilities to summon Typhon during battle.
According to Square Enix, the game continues building on the series' hybrid battle system, letting players freely switch between real-time action and the more strategic Tactical Mode, now expanded with new playable characters and additional abilities.
With "Final Fantasy VII Revelation" positioned as the culmination of nearly 30 years of storytelling tied to the original game, this latest trailer gave fans their most detailed look yet at how Square Enix plans to bring that story to its conclusion.
