Geoff Keighley seemed to learn from the experience of announcing Highguard as the final game of the Game Awards 2026, so for the final reveal of Summer Game Fest 2026, he had something special in store: Final Fantasy VII: Revelation.
The first trailer gave players their first official look at how Square Enix plans to close its reimagining of the 1997 RPG.
The third entry in this saga brings Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind as playable characters while expanding on the battle system that was refined over two entries, with fun costumes that change according to the character’s gameplay style, new combos, and new super-powerful enemies.
Matthew Mercer came out on stage to profess his love for the game, while also presenting the gameplay of Vincent Valentine, the character he voices. This former Turk is a master gunslinger, but beyond that, he’s able to transform into a Galian Beast and unleash utter destruction on his enemies, especially in a combo with a lance-wielding Cid Highwind.
The world is also hugely expanded, as Final Fantasy VII: Revelation continues the remake project after Rebirth moved the story far beyond Midgar and opened the world into larger regions and side content, with the party now able to explore the continents on the Highwind and seamlessly descend to any given location with parachutes.
The game will see the epic saga that started in 1997 to its conclusion, but whether or not the seeds of change that were put in the first two entries will remain to be seen.
"Long story short, the world's in trouble, and has been for a while."

Take your first look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, launching simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games Store and Steam in Spring 2027. pic.twitter.com/hpDup54pUy
We also had our first glimpse at the Weapons, terrifying late-game enemies that we will hopefully get to fight.
Final Fantasy VII: Revelation is scheduled to launch in spring 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC simultaneously. It will be the first game in the sub-series to be a multi-platform launch, as the Remake and Rebirth were stuck on PlayStation consoles for a year before coming out elsewhere.
