Early reviews indicate that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is surpassing its predecessor in critical acclaim, making it a strong contender for Game of the Year in 2024.

With a current Metacritic score of 93 based on numerous reviews, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is outscoring the well-received Final Fantasy VII Remake, which had an 87 rating. The game's high score places it just three points below other top-rated games like Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3, both of which received a 96 rating.
