Final Fantasy 14, Monster Hunter, and Animal Crossing top new survey of games Japanese players have spent the most time on and I can't say I'm surprised

A nationwide survey asking Japanese players which games they've spent the most time in is both super surprising and exactly what you'd expect. Massive evergreen giants such as Final Fantasy 14 and Animal Crossing New Horizons topping the list was definitely predictable, but I'm also kind of stunned to see a rogue PSP Monster Hunter game come dangerously close to the top spot.

A new survey of 5,400 people published in Famitsu magazine (shared online by Genki) has now revealed a list of the 20 most time-consuming games people in Japan have lost hours, days, or even months to. Most of the list won't surprise you – heck, there's a good chance you've also enjoyed some of them for ages – but there's also a few strays that'll definitely make you blink too hard.

Three Final Fantasies, a bunch of gachas, a handful of open-world RPGs, and a couple live-service shooters? Yeah, that checks out pretty perfectly.

In particular, critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 coming out on top is perhaps the most predictable outcome of all. You could squash a couple already-mammoth single-player RPGs together, and they still wouldn't match up to the quality content on offer in Square Enix's seemingly immortal online world, which is only gearing up to get even bigger with next year's Evercold expansion.

What's more interesting are the few surprises here. Take Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, a PSP game that's far from the series' most popular entry but still managed to secure a second place finish. Curiously, there's no Pokemon representation here at all, and only four games on the list come from publishers based in the USA: Fortnite, Minecraft, Apex Legends, and good old Skyrim.

Final Fantasy 14 Evercold changes housing for the better, Yoshi-P says, and World of Warcraft's "amazing" take on the MMO staple has "been a good source of research."
