Inspectors let rip on a “dirty, greasy, filthy” pizzeria in one of Leeds’s most affluent areas, which was told it needed a “deep clean” after cobwebs, mould spots and all sorts of other issues were found.
“Dirty” was scribbled down 15 times in the report about Mama Mia in Chapel Allerton, along with five uses of the word “greasy” and one instance of the word “filthy,” when the inspector pleaded with staff to “avoid use of the filthy tea towels in the kitchen.”
The Harrogate Road pizza parlour was handed a damning two-star hygiene rating by Leeds City Council, working on behalf of the Food Standards Agency. It means that improvements were necessary.

Inspectors gave Mama Mia owners a long list of improvements after visiting on November 17. They said the venue needed a “deep clean” in multiple rooms.
The kitchen had a greasy floor under the benches, dusty walls, dust and dirt to outside of pizza oven, dirty walls, and dirt and grease on the surfaces around the hand wash basin. The wash up room had a greasy ceiling, dirty walls and dirty sink unit (the taps and metal surfaces).
There were cobwebs over the door frames in the hall. The side store had a dirty floor and “mould spots” on the wall.
On the first floor, there was a dirty chest freezer (seals), dirty plugs and switches, a dirty light switch on the landing, plus dirty, mouldy floor and shelves. Food handlers were told to wear “clean” protective clothing.
They were also told to clean the dough ball machine and the microwave. There was rusty shelving on the counter, the hand wash basin needed drying facilities and there was no written food safety management system in place.
Mama Mia's owners, who also own Harpo's, were approached for comment.
