Food inspectors slammed a “filthy, dirty and greasy” Leeds takeaway, giving it a one-star hygiene rating.
Shalimar on Armley Ridge Road in Kirkstall received the damning rating after inspectors visited on April 28. It’s the second lowest rating possible, meaning “major improvements are necessary”.
The inspectors criticised management and staff’s “poor” food hygiene knowledge and told them to clean numerous areas and equipment in the takeaway, which offers curries, pizza, burger and fried chicken.

The inspectors highlighted the “filthy fan grilles”, told them to “replace/resurface the dirty/greasy counter area” and to “clean all dirty hand contact surfaces”. The dough mixing machine needed cleaning, as did the dough trays, along with the fridges and freezers.
They were also disappointed to find the takeaway was “not following the safety methods” required of them. Staff were told not to wear outdoor clothing while handling food, to keep the wash hand basin “free from obstruction” and to undergo important training.
There were also multiple structural issues found in Shalimar, and they were told to fix damaged areas and equipment. There were “numerous cracked floor tiles” in the counter, pizza oven area, kitchen and storage corridor.
Food was found stored in open metal containers, staff were told to transfer these to lidded plastic containers. Shalimar has been asked for a comment.
