Filip Helander looking to resurrect career at Neil Lennon's former club

Former Rangers defender Filip Helander looks set to try and resurrect his career in Cyprus with Omonia Nicosia.

The Swedish stopper was surprisingly released by Danish club Odense at the end of the season despite rejecting two bids from Anderlecht for him in January.

Helander left Rangers on a free transfer last summer after missing almost all of the last two seasons at the club with injury - including a Europa League and Scottish Cup final.

But last season, he managed 22 appearances for Odense in the Danish Superleague, won an international recall and was handed the club's captaincy.

However, he lost his place in the team, was stripped of the captain's armband and allowed to leave.

Now the 31-year-old could be set for a move to Cypriot football after ambitious Omonia offered him a one-year deal.

They finished in a disappointing fifth place last season and see Helander as the ideal recruit to shore up their defence.

Helander made just 35 league starts for Rangers after a £3.5m move from Bologna five years ago and netted an Old Firm winner in a 1-0 victory in August 2021.

Meanwhile, a former Celtic coach is eying up a move for Rangers defender Connor Goldson, according to a report.

Birmingham City are interested in Connor Goldson, the Scottish Sun claims.

Chris Davies - who recently left his role as Ange Postecoglou's No.2 at Tottenham Hotspur to take up the position at St Andrew's - is keen to strengthen his side's backline.

And with the aim of winning League One next term, he reportedly views Goldson as a crucial part of that puzzle.

Davies worked under Brendan Rodgers at Parkhead during the Irishman's first stint in charge. He followed him to Leicester in 2019.

Goldson has the sort of experience that Davies wants at Birmingham, having played over 300 games for the Ibrox club.
